Privateer Princess is set in an alternate present in which Earth has been conquered by aliens. It has been over 40 years since the aliens first arrived, and they now control much of the globe.

The aliens are physically similar to humans, enough to be genetically compatible. In many ways the culture of their planet resembles a medieval one — a world of rival kings, a powerful nobility, and a dominant church. The most aggressive monarchy is that of the Ciodali, the first to discover and colonize Earth. But other alien kings and queens have followed to claim their share of the "New World."

Alien technology is highly superior to humans', and derives from their unique biology. The aliens evolved to make much greater use of their natural bio-electrical currents, and their tech is based on the manipulation of their personal energetic fields. This leads to a "technological aristocracy" of warlords who wield amazing personal power. Di Hechzarder, the Ciodali who conquered North America, can command a telekinetic force wave that can level human cities.

The Ciodali are on Earth for the glory of conquest and, especially, for the mining of electrical wealth, usually from lightning. They convert the raw energy into special compressed power cells known as "ECs," which drive their technology and also function as their money.

Earth remains a frontier society for the aliens, meaning that most of the Ciodali here are men. Hence various types of Ciodali-human relationships have arisen, along with a growing population of "Offspring," the half-breed children of the conquest. Offsprings' hybrid biology often gives them strange and dramatic powers that neither they nor their parents understand.

Today, Earth is divided between three ruling alien nations (all rivals with each other), a subservient human race that's nevertheless by far the majority population...and an-ever growing number of super-powered kids called Offspring.
